Streetlife DJs Hot Mix 100
"Probably the most exciting DJ duo to emerge for a long time" - Mixmag
Stewart Rowell & Louis Gaston are otherwise known as the Streetlife DJs. They have over 25 years turntablist experience between them, and a blatant disregard for music genres! OK let's explain...if you think Soulwax meets Coldcut meets Sasha & Digweed you're in the right ball park...if there is such a place! There really isn't a musical boundary that the Streetlife DJs won't cross. A Streetlife set is like one big lesson in the history of dance music...in one night! Isn't that the best history lesson you're ever likely to have? DJ Magazine quoted "We love these guys because they rock...The UK's very own 2ManyDJs!" A tag they're not too unhappy about, and although there are of course similarities in their two respective, genre-crossing styles of DJ'ing, there is also a notable difference, because Stewart & Louis hail from a distinctly dance/club background (as opposed to the live rock/indie background of the infamous 2ManyDJs from Belgium). I guess we should head straight to the 80s, where as young teenagers, both Stewart & Louis spent most of their time hunting down & dancing to early hip hop, electro, funk, rare groove & new wave 80s synth pop. Then towards the end of the decade, the first acid house records emerged from Chicago and that was it, both were addicted beyond control and have been avid electronic music heads ever since. Stewart has been DJ'ing for over 15 years & producing music since he met Louis back in 1998. A former resident DJ at Café Mambo in Ibiza throughout the summer of '97 (along with a certain Steve Lawler!), he was also one of the original Saturday night residents at Home London, from start to finish, performing on the opening & closing nights. Aswell as playing before Paul Oakenfold most weeks, he supported many of the worlds biggest DJs including John Digweed, Carl Cox, Deep Dish and Danny Tenaglia, who was extremely complimentary about the way Stew warmed up for him on more than one occasion. He has guested at Ministry of Sound, Renaissance & Gatecrasher, played several Homelands & The GC Summer Soundsystem, and toured internationally, taking his sound to venues such as Home (Sydney), Space & Pacha (Ibiza), Limelight (NYC), Avalon (Boston), and the famous Liquid Room (Tokyo). Louis has forged a successful 12 year career in music production, with over 100 original productions & remixes to his name, under many different aliases. He has also been DJ'ing for many years, since the explosion of the warehouse & rave scene, appearing at many clubs & events across the UK, France & Germany, and he has been a resident on the VW festival circuit for over 10 years. Together they formed tech/tribal/progressive label POD Recordings back in 1999, with 30 releases across 3 years from several exclusively signed artists including themselves under their former Alaska guise. In 2002, the scene had become very tired in their opinion, and it was proving extremely difficult to sell underground records. POD Recordings was laid to rest and a year's sabbatical was taken, before they again got their heads together and headed off on a new journey, incorporating their love of all music, old and new. Streetlife DJs was born in 2004. Streetlife heroes & influences span far & wide, from 30 years of addiction to music; Larry Levan & Frankie Knuckles, to Robbie Vincent & Greg Edwards, from Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Cheese, DJ Cash Money & Grandmaster Flash, to Alfredo, Danny Rampling, Laurent Garnier, Andrew Weatheral and Sasha. Taking in Motown, Studio One, Sugarhill, Def Jam, Big Daddy Kane, KRS One, David Bowie, Prince, John Barry, Ennio Morricone, Sex Pistols, The Clash, Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, Human League, Kraftwerk, Pet Shop Boys, New Order/Joy Division, Primal Scream, Leftfield, Orbital & The Prodigy. Through to some current Streetlife faves including The Presets, 22-20s, Whitey, Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, The DFA and Headman.
