ONE40FIVE RADIO #4: LIVE AT BAR JAM, EBISU 19.02.03
Music is all about context. In a given situation the meaning of a song can be changed completely. Something seemingly light given weight. Something with weight poked fun at. I played this set of 80s pop in Bar Jam (an underground bar in Ebisu, Tokyo) expecting it to sparkle given the vintage UREI mixer and the ALTEC speakers. On the night, I was so surrounded by western faces that I felt like I was DJing at an office Christmas party - rather than recreating Shoom.

ONE40FIVE #6: LIVE AT BAR JAM, EBISU 19.03.02
This one`s for Kazou Aioshima. I was all lined up to play a load of balearic pop tat - spandau ballet "chant no1", yes "owner of a lonely heart (red and blue)", six sed red "shake it right", pete shelley "witness the change" - all picked up for a quid in the Beanos (of Croydon) clearout - when me old mucker - Kazou Aioshima - jazz-funk guru - and close personal friend of George Duke - rocked up. This is me attempting to change tack and keep Kazou drinking at the bar. Aioshima-san your generosity knows no bounds.

The guests this night were Gordy and Tack from Tokyo deep house institution "life". They and their dancers didn`t disappoint. Gordy how many versions of "welcome to the pleasuredome" do you own? I`m going to hit you with the 33+8 mix next time : )

ONE40FIVE RADIO #9:
This is me pre and post DJ Marbo (www.star-lowrider.com) at Bar Jam, Ebisu 19.04.05. Not sure what I was doing on the warm up. Marbo had warned me that he would play only new records, and that some of this would consist of pitched down Trance. I think that I had “trance” in mind – and tried to select things with trippy noises in. But listening back I seem to have very quickly reverted to a traditional Balearic chug. No wonder Marbo fell asleep during my set (?). Cutting edge I ain`t ? Matt described it as “trip hop” but I put that down to the lemon sours ? and maybe “the gun” by Hallelujah.

ONE40FIVE RADIO #10:
We weren`t sure how long Marbo would play for – but I was pretty certain we`d be expected to show our enthusiasm and do a grave-yard set. Just as well I stayed “fresh” (?). Currently booze policy is drink like a winkle til 2am then abruptly switch to something soft (like “weak sake”). Listening back, having been hammered by true modern “Tokyo Balearic” for a good 4/5 hours I was obviously in the mood to get my own back with some old “Balearic Balearic” ? Marbo slept through this one too.
